Manchester’s most popular choice for students, Fallowfield is located 2-miles south of the city centre and centred along the popular and busy Wilmslow Road. This vibrant area runs from Platt Fields in the north to Mauldeth Road in the south and commuting to the main campuses around Oxford Road is easy – Wilmslow Road is Europe’s busiest bus route so you rarely have to wait more than a couple of minutes. Fallowfield has two distinct areas for student housing and both have their own unique characters. Owens Park is a densely-populated grid of Victorian terraced houses located opposite the University Halls of Residence, whilst Derby Road is located to the south of the area and has larger houses and conversions with gardens and plenty of on-street and off-street parking.
Owens Park
Located opposite Owens Park Halls of Residence, this large grid of Victorian streets is one of Manchester’s most popular locations with students. All of the streets have two-storey terraced houses with small backyards and front doors right onto the street. Albion Road is the most popular choice, especially if you can find one of the houses backing onto Platt Fields, with Landcross being the second most popular (it’s on the same road as Troff, Fallowfield’s best pub/cafe). The local services are great; you can walk to Sainsbury’s in five minutes, there’s a chemist at the end of the road (good for hangovers) and a bus stop at the bottom of Cawdor Road taking you straight into central Manchester

Derby Road
If you walk south down the Wilmslow Road away from central Fallowfield and towards Withington, the streets get wider and the houses get bigger. These large tree-lined streets have some of the largest Victorian houses in south Manchester and most been converted into student flats. If you’re looking for a quieter place to live but still within 10-minutes walk of all the best bars and shops this area is probably for you

Eating & Drinking
If you’re a student living in Fallowfield you won’t be short of cheap places to eat and drink. A few years ago Fallowfield consisted of grungy pubs and cheap takeaways, but with the arrival of chain pubs such as Revolution and independent venues Trof and Font, Fallowfield now has much more choice. So if you’re looking for something more upmarket than Krunchy Fried Chicken or the Kebab King try these five places.
